The first few weeks of summer have been buzzing with activity, joy, and a whole lot of community±

Today is World Refugee Day. In a report released just a few days ago, we learned that the number of forcibly displaced people across the globe increased to over 123 million by the end of 2024. That's 1 in 67 people on Earth, and an increase of 7 million people (or 6%) from the year before.

From our beginnings as a small group of community members united around the conviction to “welcome the stranger,” Nations to Neighbors has envisioned a Billings community where refugees belong, thrive, and actively contribute to the collective well-being of their new home. Realizing this vision requires filling plenty of gaps, even with a well-functioning US Refugee Admissions Program. 

Last week, the incoming administration suspended the US Refugee Admissions Program, through which 100,000 fellow humans found safety in US communities last year.

Sayed arrived in Billings after helping to evacuate US assets from Kabul on August 15, 2021, and spending eight and a half long months in two temporary locations. His wife and four children were forced to remain in Afghanistan, unaware they were beginning a more than three-year separation. 

In this time and space of settling in, there is room to grow, reflect, and adjust. Though none of us has it all figured out just yet, we’re moving in the right direction.

I can celebrate Billings, because I’ve seen my community step warmly forward to welcome, to come alongside some of the least of these.

We are preparing to come alongside them and learn from them, with great anticipation.
